Multidisciplinary Inspiration

With so many great categories of design, it is hard to just focus on one. Which is why this blog will focus on a little bit of everything: architecture, furniture, product design, illustration, various artists, etc. Curated by Brian Everett of EVRT Studio in Kansas City

Burden House - 1947
Art collector William A.M. Burden commissioned Wallace K. Harrison (Rockefeller Center, MoMA) and Isamu Noguchi to design his summer home off the coast of Maine. What followed is one of the most incredible homes I have ever seen, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Suffering a devastating fire in 1999, it was fully restored and completed in 2006, to the exact specifications of the original. Click through to read the full article, and view the slide show.
If I lived in a house like this I would never get anything done. Instead, I would just sit and look around in disbelief: “I live here?”
(NY Times tweeted about this, this past weekend and I instantly bookmarked it)

» Faked Concrete Testing Results: Yankee Stadium, WTC, etc.

It blows my mind at how greedy some people can be. These people were so desperate to get rich, they put literally hundreds of thousands of people’s lives at stake.

“…in a sprawling case that accused the company of falsifying concrete and steel test results for nearly 120 projects in and around New York City. They include such icons as ground zero’s Freedom Tower and such crucial pieces of infrastructure as the forthcoming Second Avenue subway line.”

“The tower, the subway line, the stadium and at least 23 other buildings have been declared safe after retesting, the city Buildings Department said Wednesday. But officials are still awaiting results on at least 67 more.”

The first clue should have been their company name: Testwell Laboratories

Power Plant Addition by Brückner & Brückner
(photos by Constantin Meyer)
Here is a seriously impressive looking addition to a German power plant. I’ve always had an interest in power plants because of their industrial nature, but now I wish more power companies would take a serious look at their architecture after seeing this. Instead of an eye sore, this is now a thing of beauty.
Equally impressive is the architecture photography by Constantin Meyer

Hidden Lines by Studio JVM
Take it from someone whom basically minored in Art History and has always admired Cathedrals: this is a dream. Maybe one of the more incredible home Libraries I have seen. Studio JVM took advantage of this vaulted room, and created an amazing Cathedral inspired bookcase, completely made of cardboard. I need to recreate this in my house someday. This one goes on my permanent bookmark list as ultimate inspiration.

Sumaré House by Isay Weinfeld
Built for a graphic designer in São Paulo, this house is impressive. I mostly like it for the proportions and combination of different textures going on from the outside: concrete, wood, and the grid work. Plus that giant shelving pictured in the photo on the right is making me drool.

Bowen Island House by Sturgess Architecture
Built on an island near Vancouver, Canada the houses on the edge of a 100m rock cliff. Seperated into two parts: the main house and a guest house. Look at all of those windows and the amazing views. I can only dream.

Annie Residence by Bercy Chen Studio LP
A really great simple, boxy residence: reminds me a little of the Eames house, and mid-century styling. The open courtyard with water feature is key here, and really adds to the dimension of this home. Plus I really like the use of color. I like clean minimalism, but I personally have to have a splash of color, which this house greatly achieves. Plus, how can you ignore that awesome glowing garage?

Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe
If you like mid-century or modern architecture, then at some point in time you have seen photos of the Farnsworth House. And probably drooled. But this is not a photo, yet instead a computer rendering by Peter Guthrie. Suffice to say I am blown away. I’ve seen amazing renderings before with 3DSMax and Vray, but these are unbelievable.

Float House by Morphosis Architects
Built for “Make It Right” which is the foundation Brad Pitt started to help get homes built after Katrina’s wake. The house is designed to be flood proof. It floats like a raft, but stays anchored with posts which allow it to raise up to 3.7m (12’).
I really like the undulating roof line on this house, and the combination of all the materials: wood, aluminum, frosted plastic & glass, & colored panels. I look forward to the day when more architects use color & pattern on the outside of their buildings.

The Concrete Factory renovated by Ricardo Bofill
This place is unbelievable. I don’t know if there are many other words you can say about it. The photos speak for themselves, so make sure you click through to see them all. I don’t think I would have any problem living here…
