About

Multidisciplinary Inspiration

With so many great categories of design, it is hard to just focus on one. Which is why this blog will focus on a little bit of everything: architecture, furniture, product design, illustration, various artists, etc. Curated by Brian Everett of EVRT Studio in Kansas City

Submit your work to be featured!

Uppercase is looking for participants to redesign your favorite LP cover (or CD). There is very little info other than that, but you could get the chance to be published in their next issue. I will definitely be at least doing one submission. Deadline is Sept. 1st. Click through and scroll down for submission info.

5 Cuts by Laser Bread
I ran into Laser Bread’s Flickr account yesterday, through the ‘Make Something Cool Everyday’ group. This guy’s portfolio is amazing. I had seen some of his work before, but never looked through all of his stuff. I don’t know if I have seen many, if any other people with this volume of work, in lots of different mediums and variety, AND every single piece is awesome. Seriously, you need to look through this guys work. Click through….

The Zero.1 plays CDs, Vinyl records, MP3s, MP4s, and WAV files. It can also memorize the gaps of a Vinyl record so you can skip to a song with remote control like a CD. Designed by Francesco Cugusi and Roberto Strippoli.
I have mixed feelings about Vinyl being combined with all of those features, but it is a nice concept and great technology.

An excerpt from last weekend...

  •  First, I think this is the only chat post I have ever made on this blog. Second, last weekend my parents came to visit and here is a conversation with my Mom....
  • Me: Mom, check out this retro stereo cabinet I got. The turntable still works!
  • Mom: How neat! My dad used to have something just like this. He always played these Jazz records on it. I can only remember how repetitive this one song was, that he played all the time.
  • Me: What song was it?
  • Mom: I can't remember the name.
  • Me: (proceeds to throw on a Dave Brubeck Quartet LP, Dave Brubeck - Take Five)
  • Mom: Oh my God! That's it! I can't believe it!

Just picked this up at Half Priced Books for very cheap. I do love classical, but I mostly bought this for the cover. Look at that typography! They don’t make covers like this anymore.
Love this album cover. Auto ‘my other blog’ reblog…

As if I didn’t spend enough time on the internet, I am starting a second blog on a whim, from yesterday’s post. Kevin is going to help out, and I’m sure we will eventually gain some other support.
It isn’t really up and running yet, but there are a couple posts up for now. At some point in time we will allow submissions from readers, but it probably won’t be until this is available. I don’t really feel like making an open submission policy through email, because who knows how much work that might involve! :)
Anyway, follow 180grams if you have a love for vinyl records! The blog will basically be a visual sharing of records you own / bought, photos of your turntable or favorite record store, etc.

Working from home today, and that’s where the records are. This one was only 25¢.
Nice! Can’t go wrong with that…
I’ve been contemplating starting a second blog for people to submit too, sharing photos of their vinyl collection, recent purchases, stories, photos of their turntables etc.

“You want to make a music CD, so you pop a blank disc into your computer, it grinds a bit, and minutes later the disc pops back out. Easy peasy.

You know what’s complicated? Making a vinyl 45! The amount of machine labor, human labor, time, and materials that go into each is rather surprising.”

Yet another reason why I like collecting vinyl.  At least I know I am getting what I paid for.  After seeing this, you shouldn’t have any trouble understanding that CD’s and Digital MP3 downloads are extremely inflated, considering that vinyl doesn’t cost much more, or sometimes the same or less as the cd or download.

Who knew?

Best Buy now carries vinyl records?  Weird…

I sort of feel like that cheapens the idea.  I don’t mean to sound hipster-ish, but I just want some sort of way to seperate myself from the highschool kids…  :)

Question

ltwp:

Historians always wish that ancient civilizations had better-kept records from which to learn from. How can we try to make sure that in today’s world we are leaving sufficient evidence to fill up textbooks of tomorrow? Photos on flickr? Blog posts? It’s all in data formats that will die sooner or later. This age in which everything is digital has potential to be a huge blank spot in history if we don’t change those file formats.

I think that is a pretty good observation you have made.  I think people will always see a resurgence of certain things or media that are more for collecting, instead of just data on a hard drive.

For example, Vinyl record sales were up 15% in 2007, and up 37% last year.  I think it has to do with disastisfaction of sound quality with the digital age.  You cannot beat the quality of vinyl.  I am continually amazed at the sounds that you don’t get with an mp3, and then I play the vinyl record and it’s like I’m hearing the song for the first time.

This guy makes custom wood turntables.  Although I don’t personally care for the looks of them, it is pretty interesting to say the least.
