Multidisciplinary Inspiration

With so many great categories of design, it is hard to just focus on one. Which is why this blog will focus on a little bit of everything: architecture, furniture, product design, illustration, various artists, etc. Curated by Brian Everett of EVRT Studio in Kansas City

Wired magazine gives us a preview of what the digital magazine designed around the iPad might look like. It is a really great in-depth view of interaction with the iPad. I have to say I am seriously impressed. I already love the printed version of Wired, but this digital interactive version just blows my mind. Talk about changing the face of magazines: I think we get to see a preview here of what is to come for the publishing world.

(by the way, keep an eye out for how the user flips through the pages: with a simple flick of the thumb, even though it is on the far side of the touch screen)

Not an iPad review…..

At least not yet.

If you have no desire to even read the word iPad, then look away now.

This is not my evaluation of what I think about the iPad. I’m saving that for when I can physically get my hands on it: not trying to make any assumptions about it. After all, that is my personal theme for 2010.

I only wanted to touch upon the outpouring of hatred for the device. I personally don’t get all of the complaints. Gizmodo absolutely shredded it. Countless other blogs hate it. A vast majority of Tumblrs have voiced it is the most awful thing Apple has ever made. Now there seems to be a lot of sway in the positive direction at least.

I think everyone will be happily surprised when they get to hold one in there hands. You need to think about the iPad as an interactive entertainment device; because that is what it is. It isn’t a laptop, nor an iPhone.

I’ll use myself as an example user. I don’t own an iPhone or a Mac Book, and I’m a designer. What? I know I have to be breaking some sort of cardinal rule with that being said. First off, I’ve never really been a fan of laptops. Secondly, I don’t have an iPhone because I’m more conservative with my spending habits. I simply do not want to pay an additional $30 every single month for having internet access wherever I may be. Having that is not important to me. I only buy what I truly need.

With that being said, the iPad fits my bill pretty well. I have always wanted something besides a desktop computer, that I could do simple tasks with and mostly for entertainment. Besides, it is an Apple product. How bad can it be? However, I will say I probably would wait for the 2nd generation to release. By then they will have had time to see any mistakes they made.

That is why I think the iPad is flat out awesome.
